Summer 2026 Course Registration is open! If your student is planning to catch up, get ahead on graduation, or try something new, our self-paced summer courses offer the flexibility and quality to make it happen.

High school students can explore a wide selection of core, elective, and world language courses. 8th-grade students also have options available, including Intro to High School Math and world language courses (with registrar approval).

Student Course Evaluation Surveys Now Open: Student Course Evaluation Surveys are now live in your student’s Homeroom Canvas course. Your student’s feedback helps us improve our curriculum, mentoring, and our live and self-paced courses each year. Please remind your student to complete their surveys by Monday, April 27.

New Mobile Friendly SIS Update: We are introducing a refreshed look and feel for our Student Information System (SIS) with a more mobile-friendly design and improved navigation. This update is focused on making key tasks like applications and registration easier for parents to complete. There are no changes to how the system works, just a cleaner and more intuitive experience. Take a look at this screenshot for a preview of what’s coming soon.

LAU & Williamsburg Prom: Our sister school, Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU), is looking forward to hosting Williamsburg high school students (grades 9–12) and their guests at the Midnight in Paris Prom, happening next Friday, May 1, from 8:00-10:30 PM MT at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. End of the Year Lagoon Event: Williamsburg students and families are invited to join LAU for a day at Lagoon Amusement Park in Farmington, UT, on Wednesday, May 20, from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM MT. Spring Recess: Spring Recess is coming up next week! There will be no live online classes on April 16-17. This is a great opportunity for your student to rest, recharge, and stay in a steady rhythm as they prepare to finish the school year strong.

Online Course/Mentor Evaluation Surveys: Online Course/Mentor Evaluation Surveys will be live Monday, April 20. We count on this feedback each year to improve mentoring in the classroom. Please remind your students to take the survey once for each live course. Surveys are due Monday, April 27.

Dear Williamsburg Academy Parents,

Spring is a wonderful time of year, filled with new life, fresh energy, and exciting possibilities. Although my hay fever returns each year, I still enjoy watching plants bloom and the grass change from winter brown to green. As we see this season of growth unfold, it’s a great reminder for students to stay motivated and finish strong.

With April now here, we also want to remind you that the end of the semester is quickly approaching. The final day of the semester—and the last day to submit any assignments—is Friday, May 22. I encourage students to take advantage of Mentor Office Hours and Study Labs, which provide valuable support as they complete their coursework and prepare for the end of the term.

I'm pleased to share that registration is now open for our Self-Paced and Independent Study summer courses. These options offer a flexible way for students to continue learning and stay on track during the summer months, and they are also a great opportunity for students to catch up if they did not pass a class.

Supporting a Member of our Williamsburg Community: We are heartbroken to share that one of our beloved science mentors, Dave Rees, recently lost his son after a tragic accident. Learning Brave Summer Teen Retreat: Registration for the Learning Brave Summer Teen Retreat closes this Wednesday, April 1. There are no new announcements or action items this week! Please ensure your student completes their finals and any pre-midterm assignments by 5:00 PM MT on Friday, March 13. We hope your family enjoys a wonderful spring break!

Dear Williamsburg Academy Parents,

Can you believe we are almost halfway through the semester? The midterm deadline is next Friday, March 13, so this is a great time for students to stay focused and make sure they are on track with their coursework.

If you have not checked your student’s progress in the past week, I encourage you to take a few minutes to do so. If there are any concerns, students should connect with their mentors, attend office hours, participate in study labs, or reach out to Student Support for tutoring. These resources can help students stay on pace and meet the midterm deadline.

After midterms, students will enjoy Spring Break from March 16-20. During that week, there will be no live online courses, giving students time to rest and recharge before the second half of the semester begins.

Daylight Saving Time Reminder: Daylight Saving Time (DST) starts this Sunday, March 8! Williamsburg’s class schedules will follow the time change. Families in states that don’t observe DST will see classes start an hour earlier starting Monday. For students in DST-observing states, class times remain the same—just be sure to double-check clocks and alarms so so your student is on time and ready to learn!

Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students in both Live and Self-Paced classes must submit all assignments from the first half of the semester on Friday, March 13, by 5:00 PM MT. After this deadline, midterm assignments will lock, and late submissions will not be accepted.

Learning Brave Summer Teen Retreat: We are partnering with Learning Brave to offer current 8th-12th grade students a Summer Teen Retreat at Glacier View Ranch in Ward, Colorado, from June 1-5, 2026. This multi-day, hands-on adventure helps students build friendships, strengthen character, develop leadership, and gain practical life skills in an immersive outdoor setting. Adventures Program Updates: We’re upgrading our Adventures program with new dates and adjusted locations. To see these changes, families in Utah can visit our Utah Adventures web page, and families in Arizona can visit our Arizona Adventures web page.

If your student plans to participate in Adventures next year, be sure to register for Outdoor Adventures Foundations + Expeditions, starting Tuesday, February 17. Once your student is registered, you will soon be able to select your preferred location.

Dear Williamsburg Academy Parents,

February is a great time for students because the whirlwind of a new semester has finally calmed down! Classes are no longer brand-new, routines are starting to feel more manageable, and expectations are clearer. It’s also when students begin to recognize where they may need a little extra support—and that awareness is a strength, not a setback.

This is the perfect time to take advantage of mentor office hours, study labs, and individual tutoring, while also leaning on parents, mentors, and family members for encouragement and guidance. With the pressure of the “first weeks” behind them, students can focus on steady progress, ask questions with confidence, and build habits that support long-term success.

Registration for the fall semester also begins on February 17, which means we’re already looking ahead to the next school year! We will have a Registration Help Session via Zoom on Thursday, February 12, at 6:00 PM MT to answer questions and offer help. This is an exciting opportunity for students and families to plan thoughtfully, explore course options, and set goals for continued growth. A little planning now can go a long way toward a smooth and successful start in the fall.

WA Course Add/Drop Deadline: Tuesday, January 20, is the final day for students to add, drop, or change a course for the winter semester. If you have questions or are considering a schedule change for your student, please contact our Academic Counselor for support.

Parent Mentor Conferences & Updates—Now Available Anytime: We are no longer holding once-a-semester Parent Mentor Conferences and Updates. Instead, parents can message their student’s mentor anytime in SIS—no need to wait for a scheduled week. This change allows for quicker communication and support when your student needs it most.

To message your student’s mentor in SIS:

1. Go to the ‘My Students’ tab in the Personal Menu.
2. Select your student and open the ‘Classes’ tab.
3. Click your student’s mentor in the ‘Mentor’ column.
4. Type your message and click ‘Send Message’—that’s it!

LAU & Williamsburg Winter Formal: Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) is hosting Winter Formal at Red Butte Garden’s Orangerie in Salt Lake City on Saturday, February 14, from 7:00-9:30 PM. This event is open to all Williamsburg Academy (WA) students in grades 6-12 and their guests. Students may attend with a date, with friends, or on their own. Space is limited, and registration closes February 13 or when capacity is reached. More details and registration are available on LAU’s Winter Formal event web page.

LAU Southern Utah Paint Night: LAU is also hosting a Paint Night in St. George, UT, on Saturday, February 21, from 7:30-9:00 PM MT. This event is open to all Williamsburg students, along with their friends and families. Attendees will enjoy unlimited pizza in a private event space while they paint, relax, and connect with one another. Space is limited, so be sure to register soon on LAU’s Paint Night web page.

As we approached the holiday break, Renee Smith concluded her tenure as Headmaster of Williamsburg Academy. We are grateful for her service and leadership during her time with the school.

I have been asked to step into the role of Interim Headmaster to support a smooth transition and ensure continuity in our day-to-day operations. All Mentors, Student Support staff, and other team members remain in their roles and continue their dedicated support of our students.

As we move forward, I encourage families and students to contact me directly with any questions or concerns. I also want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance at Mentor Office Hours and Study Labs, as these play a critical role in student success.

Ordering Winter Semester Books: Families who are not enrolled through the Full-Time Student Package need to order their student’s winter books before Monday, December 22, to ensure everything arrives in time for the winter semester. To find your student's book lists, log in to SIS, go to My Students, click on your student's name, then click on “Classes.” Please use the ISBNs listed to purchase from a retailer of your choice.

Middle of Year (MOY) Benchmark Assessments: Your student’s MOY Benchmarks will be available in Canvas starting December 15. These required assessments must be completed before live classes begin on January 7 and are used exclusively by mentors and support teams to help students succeed.

We’ve set aside January 5-6 as dedicated Benchmark work days, but students can start as soon as they’re ready. Knocking them out early is a great way to begin the winter semester strong! Additional details will be sent via email next week—stay tuned.

End-of-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Finals are next week! Students in both Live and Self-Paced classes must submit all assignments by Friday, December 19, at 5:00 PM MT. After this deadline, all assignments will lock, and late submissions will not be accepted.

Winter Back-to-School Night: All Williamsburg Academy (WA) parents and students are invited to join us for our Winter Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, January 6, at 6:00 PM MT. This event is a great opportunity to hear winter semester updates from the Williamsburg Academy team and participate in an open Q&A for both new and returning families. Daylight Saving Time Reminder: Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends this Sunday, November 2! Williamsburg’s class schedules will follow the time change. Families in states that don’t observe DST will see classes start an hour later starting Monday. For students in DST-observing states, class times remain the same—just be sure to double-check clocks and alarms so your student is on time and ready to learn!

Dear Williamsburg Academy Parents,

Have you ever noticed your student’s focus fading after a while? That’s completely normal—our brains are built to need breaks! Knowing this, our tutoring labs use the Pomodoro Method, a simple yet powerful approach that makes study time more effective and less stressful.

The Pomodoro Method was developed in the 1980s by a college student in Italy who managed his study sessions with a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato—pomodoro in Italian. He discovered that breaking work into short bursts made it easier to stay focused and finish strong. That simple idea later became known as the Pomodoro Method, and it’s still going strong today.

Here’s how your student can try it at home:

1. Set a timer for 25 minutes. This is one “Pomodoro.”
2. Work with focus—no distractions.
3. When the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break.
4. After a few Pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break.

This method works because it builds focus, curbs procrastination, and makes study time feel like a game. Parents appreciate it for the lasting study habits it creates—I even used it with my own kids, and my oldest, who is now a pilot, still relies on it today!

To make it even easier, we host weekly Pomodoro Labs where students can practice this method alongside mentors and peers. You’ll find the schedule and Zoom link under Upcoming Events. I also encourage you to try it at home with your student—sometimes even small shifts in study habits can make a big difference.

Dear Williamsburg Parents,

I recently came across a Forbes article that challenged the idea of “back-to-school.” The author suggested September isn’t about going back at all—it’s about moving forward. That idea resonated with me, because each fall offers families a natural moment of renewal.

This season of reset is an opportunity not just to slip into familiar routines, but to ask: Are our routines helping our students grow in the ways that matter most? At Williamsburg Academy, we believe education should be more than simply completing assignments. It’s about cultivating curiosity, independence, and a love of learning.

As you settle into the school year, I encourage you to consider the “forward” opportunities in your family—the creative ways you can refresh habits, inspire deeper conversations, and build rhythms that make learning feel meaningful. Because if “back-to-school” only means more of the same, we’ve missed the point.

LAU Wheeler Farm Fall Dance: Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) invites Williamsburg students, along with friends and family, to their fall dance at Wheeler Farm in Murray, UT, on Saturday, September 20, from 7:00-10:30 PM MT. The 2025–26 school year is officially underway! We’re excited to see new and returning faces in our Zoom rooms and look forward to joining your student on their educational journey.

As Mentors and support staff, our greatest desire is to support you in educating your students. Our mentors are licensed, well-trained, highly qualified, and they genuinely care. We focus on teaching students how to think, not just what to think, and know that working with you leads to the best outcomes.

We ask for your help in setting your student up for success this year. Research shows that students are more successful when parents are actively involved in their education. Below are four focus areas that can greatly boost your student’s success:

FOCUS #1: Help Students Create a Quiet Area for Class and Homework

A quiet, distraction-free area helps students focus during class and while completing homework in Canvas. Each live class is only 50 minutes long, so a dedicated space allows them to be fully present and get the most out of their learning time.

FOCUS #2: Encourage Note-Taking

Note-taking improves learning, concentration, and memory. Active note-taking during class and while reading deepens understanding and helps students recall material for out-of-class assignments. Encourage note-taking to become a habit by providing adequate notebooks and offering praise during your weekly check-ins with your student.

FOCUS #3: Establish a Regular Reading Routine

Our educational model centers on interactive classes, engaging discussions, meaningful projects, and the original works of history’s greatest thinkers—making reading essential. While not all students love to read, what they read forms the foundation for learning. Students are best prepared when they read in advance and take their own notes on the material. Spreading reading throughout the week, rather than cramming into long sessions, improves engagement and preparation.

FOCUS #4: Implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan

We have seen great success from parents who implement the 3-Step Parent Support Plan with their student. Following this plan can positively impact your student’s learning and often turns parents into co-mentors in the process. When parents, mentors, and support staff work together, we can better ensure student success.

As Headmaster, educator, and parent, I understand the depth of your hopes for your child’s education. I have taught in a variety of roles from Montessori to the university classroom, and I know the most meaningful learning happens when students feel known, inspired, and supported. That’s exactly what we strive to offer at Williamsburg.

As I shared during Back-to-School Night, our goal is more than academic achievement—we’re here to prepare your students to lead meaningful lives with character, purpose, and vision. Through Socratic discussions, personal mentorship, and a curriculum rooted in classical thinking, we foster a lifelong growth mindset.

This weekly newsletter is your window into school life. We’ll share what’s ahead, highlight resources and events, and occasionally offer insights to support you on the parenting path. I will also be sharing a few personal reflections from time to time, because I know how valuable it is to learn from one another.

Action Items

Student Orientation and Benchmark Assessments: To be fully prepared for the first day of school, all students must complete their Orientation coursework and three Benchmark Assessments in Canvas. Benchmarks are used internally to help personalize your student’s learning experience and improve our course curriculum. Please work with your student to complete these as soon as possible. 

Additional details about Orientation and Benchmark requirements are available on Page 6 of the WA Welcome Packet. Your student will need an SIS login to complete Orientation and Benchmarks. If they haven’t created one yet, you can find setup instructions on Page 5.

Note: If your student is enrolled through a California partner school, they’ll complete that school’s Benchmark Assessments—no need to take Benchmarks twice!
