Williamsburg Parent Update

Dear Williamsburg Parents,

As we approach midterm exams at Williamsburg Academy, this can be a stressful time for students as they complete assignments and prepare for tests. As parents, you may also feel this pressure while supporting your student.

To help your student prepare for the upcoming midterm assignment deadlines, I’d like to offer a few key steps:

1. Check grades in the Canvas Gradebook to identify any missing assignments or low scores. For detailed instructions on how to review grades, watch our Reviewing Grades video on our On-Demand Parent Orientation web page.
2. Read mentor feedback on assignments in the Canvas Gradebook.
3. Reach out for support by scheduling an appointment during your student’s mentor’s office hours (usually listed on the Canvas course homepage).

Encouraging your student to review their work and communicate with their mentor is one of the best ways to prepare for midterms. Our mentors are eager to support students, and self-advocacy is an important part of their success.

As you take some time off for Spring Break, I encourage you to explore the in-person 2025 USA Teen Retreat happening in June. This gathering gives students a valuable opportunity to connect with peers and enrich their academic experience. Details are listed below, and I’m happy to answer any questions.

Mid-Semester Assignment Deadlines: Midterms are next week! Students need to submit all assignments from the first half of the semester by the following dates:

Live Classes: March 11 by 9:00 PM MT

Self-Paced Courses: March 14 by 5:00 PM MT

After these dates and times, assignments due before midterms will lock, and late submissions will no longer be possible.

2025 USA Teen Retreat: Current and incoming WA high school students (grades 8–12) are invited to the 2025 USA Teen Retreat for a week of adventure, leadership, and connection! Hosted by Learning Brave, this unforgettable experience takes place June 2–6 at Glacier View Ranch in Colorado. Students will engage in immersive leadership training, outdoor adventures, and meaningful friendships with peers from across the country. The cost is $750, covering lodging, meals, and activities (flights not included). Spots are limited—register on the 2025 USA Teen Retreat web page by March 24 to secure your student’s place!

LAU & Williamsburg Prom: Leadership Academy of Utah (LAU) is excited to welcome Williamsburg high school students (grades 9–12) and their guests to the Great Gatsby Prom on May 2, 2025, from 8:00–11:00 PM MT at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. Dear Williamsburg Parents,

It has been a pleasure meeting with many of you during this week's Parent Mentor Conferences. I’ve been especially impressed by students who are taking the lead—self-assessing their progress and asking thoughtful questions about how they can improve. It’s inspiring to see them, especially those new to Williamsburg, actively self-advocating and taking ownership of their education.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on our school’s beginnings. Since Williamsburg was founded in 2008, its vision has been carried forward by incredible mentors, staff, parents, and students. Together, we’ve shaped the unique “Burger Culture” we have today—built on our core mission of preparing students for meaningful lives as principled leaders. A key part of this mission is helping students connect with our student motto: Becoming Who We Are. We believe every student possesses both greatness and goodness, and like Socrates, we aim to “draw out what is already within them” through interactive classrooms, engaging assignments, and a supportive student culture.

As parents, you play an essential role in this journey. No one knows your student better, no one loves them more, and no one has a greater influence on their growth. To support you, we encourage you to revisit our WA Parent-Student Handbook, especially the Parent Commitments (p. 15) and Parent Resources (p. 39) sections. These sections offer valuable insights for guiding your student’s success at Williamsburg.

New World Language Courses: Exciting news! Starting next school year, we will offer new live World Language courses: Spanish 1, French 1, and Japanese 1 & 2. Learning a new language not only enhances communication skills, but also fosters cultural understanding and opens doors to diverse opportunities. Registration opens on February 18—be sure to sign up for these new courses.

STAR Progress Check Results Available Now: If your student completed STAR testing in January, their updated score is now available on their Renaissance dashboard. If they didn’t test in January, their August score will still be displayed. Follow these steps to access their results:

1. Go to the Renaissance Welcome Portal, select “I’m a Student," and enter our school Renaissance ID (rp-83ca) if prompted.
2. Enter the same username and password your student used to complete their progress check. Login help is available in this document under the “Instructions” section.
3. On the Renaissance dashboard, scroll down to the Parents and Guardians section and select "Get Email Updates".
4. Click on "Progress" in the top right corner. The Star Unified Scores will be at the bottom of this page. You can find how to understand these scores and their implications in this document.

December is such an exciting time of year—with holiday preparations, family gatherings, and a well-deserved school break just around the corner!

For many students, though, the focus is still on assignments, final exams, and the stress of finishing the semester strong. To support them, mentors sent emails this week outlining steps your student can take to finish well and maximize their hard work this semester.

Parents, I encourage you to meet with your student, review their progress, and help them create a solid plan to finish up the semester strong. Look for missing assignments, grades of 1/100 (indicating they couldn’t be graded and require resubmission), and mentor comments on assignments that have been graded lower than usual. Your support can make all the difference!

Weekly Student Progress Email Update: Starting next week, parents will receive our Weekly Student Progress email twice a week—on both Wednesday and Saturday. This email includes updates on your student’s grades, class logins, and course pacing. This change means you’ll have a closer, more frequent look at your student’s progress, giving you more opportunities to give them timely support when needed.

I hope you and your student successfully navigated the mid-semester deadline and exams. This time is a great opportunity for students to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments, so it’s important for them to take time and recognize what they've achieved so far!

Today, I’m excited to introduce Heather Evans, our Academic Counselor and a valued member of the Williamsburg Academy team. Since joining us at the beginning of the school year, Heather has already made a positive impact on both parents and students.

As a licensed school counselor, Heather provides essential social-emotional support, guidance on graduation requirements, and post-secondary planning. She is passionate about helping students identify their strengths and passions, guiding them toward courses and career pathways that align with their long-term goals.

At Williamsburg, Heather's primary focus is to collaborate with families to support both students who are struggling and those who are excelling and looking for new challenges. She can assist with college and career pathways, scholarships, recommendation letters, and admissions essays. Additionally, Heather offers short-term counseling, crisis support, and helps families find appropriate local resources.

Many of you are experiencing online schooling for the first time this semester, and I’ve been truly impressed by how your students have taken ownership of their education. When students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and focus on “how to think” rather than “what to think,” they truly thrive.

I hope the first three weeks of classes have been rewarding and exciting! If your student is new to Williamsburg and finding the transition to online schooling overwhelming, remember that our Mentors are here to support them. Our goal is to ensure that both you and your student receive the best educational experience possible.

This week, I’d like to share some valuable insights from a Williamsburg alumnus who graduated just this last year. His reflections offer a glimpse into what students can expect for their future here at Williamsburg:

"Recently, I’ve had to modify my perspective on the ‘why’ behind education. I've come to realize that learning isn't just about preparing for a steady career; it's also about acquiring the skills needed to impact others' lives positively. This shift in understanding has taught me that education is not only about becoming a productive individual but also about leading selflessly and inspiring positive change in those around me.

With this new perspective, I've also realized that academic growth extends beyond just personal achievements. By pushing myself academically and overcoming my perceived limitations, I’ve gained the tools to better serve and support others. While the confidence and personal growth I gain from academic success is fulfilling, the true value lies in using my education to make a positive impact on the lives of others.”

Dear families,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our returning and new parents and students at Williamsburg Academy! Over the summer, we have been busy hiring new mentors, updating and improving existing courses, and introducing new courses. All of these efforts are aimed at preparing for an exceptional educational experience in the 2024-25 academic year.

For those new to Williamsburg Academy, I would like to take a little space in this message to introduce myself: I was born and spent most of my life in Australia. In 2016, my family of seven decided to embark on an adventure to explore various countries and cultures, seeking a different educational experience. Fortunately, in 2017, Williamsburg Academy found me on the top of Mt Vesuvius, Italy, when I had a chance to meet with two Williamsburg mentors and their families. That day, I was introduced to an entirely new way of thinking about education.

This chance meeting transformed my life. Although my family has continued to live in various countries, including the United Kingdom, where we currently reside, I began working as a Mentor with Williamsburg Academy in 2018. Throughout this period, my family and I have embraced Williamsburg's culture and recognized the positive impact its community has had on our lives.

In addition to serving as the Headmaster of Williamsburg Academy, I am fortunate to mentor Personal and Social Leadership classes. This year, I will also start mentoring Japanese in our live language classes. I am honored to work with our dedicated student leaders who serve the student body throughout the year. Being in the classroom with students is deeply meaningful, and their enthusiasm energizes me and helps me grow as a person. I am truly grateful for the journey that brought me from across the world to this incredible environment of learning and growth.

As we approach the final week of this semester, I would like to express my gratitude to all the parents and students of Williamsburg Academy. It has been a fantastic year for our mentors, staff, and especially for myself.

It has and continues to be an honor to be a part of this educational journey with you. I speak for all mentors when I say that there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your students' growth and success. Preparing principled leaders for this world is one of our missions, and we sincerely hope we have achieved that this year.

In the final leadership classes that I taught this week, I asked students, "How have you changed as a result of your learning this year?" I invite us all to ask ourselves the same question and reflect on the priviledge it is to be a part of such a wonderful educational community.

LAU & WL Lagoon Day: Next week, LAU and WL celebrating the end of the school year at Lagoon Amusement Park on May 22, from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM MT in Farmington, UT. Attendees who have registered by May 21 will receive a promo code to purchase tickets at our discounted group rate via email. There is no participant cap, so invite your family and friends!
